Queer Media Rec List

Sometimes a see a screenshot of a tweet pass me by like the shadow of a leviathan under the water saying something like "Heated Rivalry is the first time I've seen gay people on my screen" and I cry and cry at the sad existence they must live. Here is the ever growing list of queer shows, movies, and short films that I have seen and recommend, to help you if you are in that dearth. These are media that have a cannon queer main character(s). There are no pulls with a gay best friend and cishetallo protag unless the media in question is explicitly about exploring queerness. Note, I am an avid BL watcher but have refrained from adding every single BL I have watched right now (since there are over 200).

Some of these offerings may offend your sensibilities, or have quote unquote bad representation. These are media that I have sometimes enjoyed in spite of, or because of that fact. Queerness is a spectrum, and there should be something for everyone in here. There is not one straight line from repressive to progressive, or one correct depiction of a queer identity or journey. Your taste may not be mine, and most of the time I think my taste is "I had fun!" which is perfectly valid. You are in my house. Now let me serve you some tea!

I waited years for this GL, after watching Milk and Love in Bad Buddy (my first BL) be the lesbian side couple that we were all gaslighting ourselves over. This was back in the day when we didn't get lesbians, you see. And they delivered this sweet show, with an awkward disaster teen who accidentally catfishes her crush. And there's an autistic alien who also gets the girl. Was it worth the wait? Well, I certainly had fun!

Every so often I sigh and thank the gods at GMMTV that they allowed P'Jojo to make this show. Polyamory. Strippers. Gangs. Guns. Nerdy virgin Tay who ends up with the hottest partners to grace our screens. 3 Will be Free is a wild ride from start to finish and I enjoyed every damn second of it.

I rewatch this show at least once a year. More probably. On my birthday. When I watched something emotionally devastating and I need a cleanse. When I feel like kicking my feet over the cutest pair of pink cons. The theme song has been my most listened to song for 4 years in a row. About Youth is it for me. It's a ball of love. The cutest lil nerd muso has been crushing on the lovely and lonely popular boy for years after a moment of kindness, and when he gets to repay the favour they fall into each other's orbit. We're talking slice of life in the best kind. Everyone say thankyou Taiwan.

I think some people would quibble with this being a queer media rec, since it's ostensibly a het couple, however I disagree. The non gender conforming protag disguises herself as a guy for a job, and her boss falls in love with her as a guy, realising his own bisexuality. The amount of gender feels in this show are insane, and realisation that you have feeling for another dude is deep and welling, and not taken lightly. This show is a bit silly sometimes, but the beach sunrise scene plays regularly through my mind, and while I may hate the glowupTM at the very end, I still find this show on my rewatch cycle. Even just for the iconic T-shirt (you will know it when you see it).

Another one brought to me by the lovely Tumblr subber, Don't Care for an Old Man's Underwear is a show that gives you a prejudiced middle-aged man who nobody really likes, even his family whom he adores, and says - you can grow at any age. For Okita, the impetus is running into the gay son of a family friend, who offers to help him be a better person. This is a lovely and silly show about their friendship that truly believes the best in people, and says that sometimes you just need to have a reason to update yourself.

Duang! This autistic4autistic show had me flapping my hands every week, and for good reason. For all this could be set up as a pushy stalker trying to get with the guy he just met, this is really a show about letting someone in past your walls, of wanting to love someone but only as far as they will let you, of kind characters who support each other, and finding someone that truly does know and understand you, who is willing to wait for you. This show doesn't punish you with convoluted miscommunication, or unearned trust. It works for every step, and does it well. Duang!

I watched this show as part of a watch party, where we also read along with the book each week. It was really fun - and a little shelter from the storm that was the national reception of this show. When you live in the QL bubble, sometimes you forget that the wider population (especially in conservative countries like Korea), uh... hate us? That being so, LitBC is a journey through the young adulthood of our protag Ko Yeong, his relationships, dramas, and societal pressures, and is semi-autobiographical. He's messy, and struggling, and charming, and makes mistakes, and you root for him to find peace. In the end, there will always be frozen blueberries in the freezer.

This is a show that requires you to A. be familiar with the BL industry of the early 2020's, and B. be inoculated to the most obtrusive sound effects to ever grace a screen. That being so, I adore it. When a show gets meta, that is where I am at. Poking fun at the BL genre, while still being firmly seated within in? Have the literal author of the Y-novel cameo at the end? A younger seme who is chasing after the man he's been crushing on for years? Authors, actors, being forced to write steamier NC scenes in order to get a novel published, it's all here.

Luckily for us, in 2023 there was still a little fluidity allowed, which is how we got Only Friends! The second season does not hold up to its somewhat (for the ThaiBL land) controversial predecessor because of the backlash from toxic fans. Boooo. It's all about the rooftop. This one has some giggly girls sharing lipstick and talking about the daddy bear gym teacher. Bully romance is second to meeting someone who gets it, that you can be yourself with for some snatched moments, before you need to go back to boymode. This is a period piece, although rural 90's Japan doesn't look a lot different from today, and accordingly, this isn't a happily ever after. When the screen fades to black, you hope that some of the decisions or sacrifices made are overturned as the characters age, but maybe not. In any case, the moment was there. TW for some intense bullying.

I saw this movie at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival, mainly because I wanted to see how it fits in with the conversation between BL and Queer media as a whole - and I was riveted. Also I walked in late and was immediately met by my best friend Tommy Alejandrino. Always so happy to see Tommy on my screen! This is the expansion of director Petersen Vargas' short film 'How to Die Young in Manila', and follows a group of gay sex workers as they bring the body of their friend back to his hometown, over one night. It is a story of agency, of the price of being young and gay in the Philippines, of whether your body belongs to yourself, of found family and brotherhood.

This is definetly a film for horror movie letterboxd reviewers, the kind of tongue in cheek that has producers talk over the wunderkind director and the 'queer assistant' silent the whole zoom call, questioning what the point of their presence is - and it's also about getting over mental blocks around sex by sexualising yourself through the eyes of a disenfranchised murderer - something I'm sure many queers can relate with. I think I was the only one laughing in the pre-release screening I went to on a Monday evening, but that's okay because this was a movie for me.

The first Thai trans MP directed this show. The school as a microcosm of authoritarian rule, of citizen dissent, of internalised homophobia and generational trauma; the length that people go to not lose control, to enforce the rules even at your own detriment, and what it takes to pull someone out. This show has lived in my heart since it aired, got me interested and invested in Thai politics, in the graffiti scene (check out my fanfics for that), and is the first show I point to when people call the genre of BL vapid and fetishizing. Here's one for my closeted gays and the pain we can inflict.

"Why did you kiss me?" "To cure your trauma / Why did you kiss me?" "To give you trauma." I love this show so much. I have rewatched it countless times. Surfing is for the gays, and so is having trauma. When a show starts in a psychologist appointment, you know what you're in for. A small town gay who can't swim joins a surfing club because the older guy he vibed with while waiting tables at work is in it, and it goes better and worse than you'd think. Dramatic sensibilities and stunning cinematography will have you frothing, and the emotional core is so resonant. And my main girl Ae Ri is the fag hag of the decade, a dying breed.

The biggest tragedy of my life is that I am yet to watch Saving Face. But I have watched this gem. I got angry at some reviews today because they wanted more gay or w/e, and I'm like, okay you didn't appreciate the movie for what it was BUT I DID. Getting mad at the hiding? Have you been a closeted teen in a conservative town? The most realistic thing about this film was the longing to leave, and maybe you can finish your coming of age somewhere else. These are the snatches that some of us get when we're young. Also golden retriever bestie my beloved. I would eat that food.

I was an extremely late late-comer to this movie, and expected something a bit more melodramtic (see: Portrait), and then was thrown for a loop when the second act started. Somehow I had missed... everything about this movie. If you haven't watched it, you have to. Lesbians sit within a world that sexualises them, and are excluded from their own sexulaity. Criticisms on taste are w/e, but to call this move fetishistic undermines the central narrative. More period lesbians doing crime, thank you very much.

A true story about a Kathoey (gay/trans/GNC) volleyball team taking on the national title, and such a fun romp. It is a bit of a by/for straight people film (see the queer media analysis lens of by/for/about), but nonetheless has colour and style, especially for the time.

This is the OG gay thai movie. This is the bedrock of Thai BL, and everything that has been built in the subsequent 2 decades. Love of Siam is the bittersweet to all of the insufferably sweet, and is well worth the watch if you want to learn gay cinema history, but also get in your feels about broken families, childhood and growing up, and realising your sexuality in a disapproving culture and time.

I wonder if people think trans girls only exist during summer? Or maybe it's the liminal space that allows them to just be themselves? Not forced in misgendering uniforms and such. Anyway, I do think that fat girls and trans girls are the most disrespected girls. They deserve all the respect and love. This movie is about death?

I watched this movie for the first time in the movie room at my uni hall of residence with a bunch of my friends - and it was only the other queer in the room and I who enjoyed it. The general buzz after the movie was a 'wasn't that... problematic?'. Is the character of Dr. Frank-N-Furter transphobic? Is it rapey? Oh Lord oh Lord, save me from the pearl clutching. Palatable to today's audience it may not always be, this is a movie about celebrating the queerness and agency, and one of the greats of queer cinema.

The buffy vampface appearance at the end made this. I disliked the love interest, she is the exact type of Sydneysider that rubs me the wrong way, and I never knew if part of the horror was that relationship, but I have a feeling it was not. That being so, I love a good spooky sapphic story. Very avant garde trans cinematography. I was sitting next to the director while watching this one, lol.

I watched the original short many many years ago, and was delighted to discover there was a whole movie (maybe early uni?) some time later. This is a gay remake, and I know that some prefer the OG, but as someone who hasn't watched the og, I enjoyed this. I love love Lily Gladstone, and I saw Han Gi-chan many years ago in Where Your Eyes Linger (go watch that too) and really enjoyed his performance here, as an expat commitment-phobe artist. I love that this movie feels like a queer found family, and with the craziness and heartbreak that comes with that family. They should have eaten more food though.

Why are you crying little latin boy? Wesley Snipes as a drag queen is glorious, and Patrick Swayze portrays the most sympathetic trans woman character I have seen in a block buster. This is the type of movie that would be unthinkable in this political climate, and I'm so glad it exists. It sits alongside my national pride of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert as a drag queen road trip. These queens are everything, and the joke about cops checking flower shops and boutiques for the gays is *chef's kiss*.

A second "I have never felt so seen" is the Muslim lesbian who holds both her faith and her sexuality at the same time, and also doesn't want to come out to the wider faith community. Are you half-assing the gay lifestyle? Okay but seriously, working professionals are always in a tricky place re. coming out, and that journey should not be trivialised. I had access to this through the lovely subs of a Tumblr mutual, and I am so glad that they brought it to the table. This is a show about a gay divorce lawyer who works with his private investigator partner to get people justice in a country with no no-fault divorce. It is no coincidence that Japan also does not have same-sex marriage. This show asks the question of how far you should go to get justice for your suffering clients, who has the right to make such a commitment, and does the legal system protect the vulnerable? Well worth the watch if you can find good subs.

I watched this may years ago, when it first aired, which is insane for me because I think I had only watched one other anime? I distinctly remember telling my cousin about it and him going "isn't that gay?" and I was like "noooo no it's not!" I was a weeny. Iconic piece of queer cinema. And like everyone else on BBC's Blue Planet, I did get interested in figure skating because of it.
